While bartenders around the world have made it more famous than ever in recent years, gin has a much older history rich in twists and turns. Discover it to know everything about this essential spirit!
From Dutch Genever to British Gin Craze
Contrary to what one might think, gin does not originate from England but from the Netherlands. Indeed, it is here that the oldest recipe dating from 1495 is found. It was developed by Philip Duff, the first to put the juniper berry in a brandy. It then answers to the name of Genever. Little by little, it met with a certain success in its birthplace. But it is in the 18th century that it will know a real impulse.
In 1688, the British soldiers returned from the war and the Dutchman William of Orange was installed on the throne of England. Gin also shows its conquering spirit. But his reputation is suffering. It became the alcohol of choice for the working class and was accused of causing many excesses. This is the famous “gin craze”. To put an end to these abuses, the Gin Act was passed in 1736. The tavernkeepers become the only ones who can sell them.
A turbulent journey
It was not until the 19th century that it once again had a respectable status. And this will be done with a cocktail that is still being emulated today, the Gin & Tonic. The military present in the colonies seek to consume with pleasure the quinine used against malaria. So they associated it with gin and created without knowing it a beverage that would last for centuries. The bartenders have taken it over and have created an infinite number of variations on the gin. So much so that it made a thunderous entry into pop culture through James Bond’s Martini.
Then, in the 80’s, the enthusiasm fell. Gin is once again affiliated with excessive consumption without regard to quality. It is only recently that he has broken away from this image. A revival inspired by passionate and demanding distillers. By multiplying the botanicals used to make it and by mastering with precision the techniques of elaboration, they have composed an infinite palette that suits all palates. This trend has been reinforced by the parallel development of premium tonics. Taste them and find the one that suits you.
