Scotland, a land of whisky…and gin!

Cradle of many myths and legends, Scotland is also a must in the world of spirits. Whisky, of course, but also some of the world’s best-known gins. So much so that it now accounts for over 70% of all gins made in the UK.

The tradition of distillation

This impressive figure is due in no small part to the region’s history and the many distilleries located there. The Scots have long been masters in the art of whisky, but this famous scotch requires patience. Since gin is aged in barrels for several years, it has become an effective and interesting way of bringing bottles to market while you wait. This initially confidential tradition quickly spread, and today there are over fifty producers.

Today, it’s impossible to visit any part of Scotland without taking a tour of a famous distillery or enjoying a tasting of local gins in an authentic pub. Especially in Edinburgh, where it all began in the 18th century. At the time, the first bottles of Dutch genever were being sold via the port of Leith. They were exchanged for wool and other goods, and soon became quite popular. So much so that local distilleries were inspired to produce their own versions. Scottish gin was born, and would never cease to evolve.

Hendrick’s, a gin brand that needs no introduction, is also one of the great Scottish classics. In Ayrshire, just a stone’s throw from the coast, it is made from two ancient stills, the Carter Headet and the Bennett Still. An artisanal process that gives it all its personality. It’s the result of an infusion of coriander seeds, lemon peel, rose petals and cucumbers, among others. We appreciate its aromatic sweetness, fullness and roundness, a caress balanced by the freshness of the cucumber.
