Where does Sothis gin come from?
Sothis gin is distilled from organic grapes and plants grown in the vineyards of Maison M. CHAPOUTIER, in the heart of the Rhône Valley. The name Sothis comes from the star associated with Greek and Egyptian goddesses. This star appears in the sky at the summer solstice, and is a sign of the harvest.
Its creator, Maxime Chapoutier, grew up in a family of winegrowers who cultivate with respect for the vines and the land. The entire estate is run biodynamically.
The idea for the gin came to him after a world tour of vineyards. During this trip, a botanist drew up a floral identity card for his estate. This work inspired Maxime Chapoutier to create his Sothis Gin after “long months” of refining his recipe.
His Sothis gin recounts this exchange between heaven and earth.
The design of Sothis gin.
The soil on which the botanicals for this gin grow is rather special, being composed of granite, loess and rolled pebbles. It’s the only appellation in the world to contain all four geological ages. This makes the rendering of the various products all the more intense.
It’s on these rich soils that the eight botanicals that make up this gin are harvested.
The first, of course, is common juniper, followed by wild thyme, chamomile, vervain, immortelle, St John’s wort, yarrow and juniper.
As for the design, it is made in a Stupfler alembic made entirely by hand by a “meilleur ouvrier de France”.
It all begins with a 24-hour maceration of certain plants in grape alcohol. The final botanicals are added, and the mixture is distilled for 4 hours.
Distillation evaporates the more or less volatile elements, separating and sublimating each aroma.
Pestrin spring water is used for rectification. This water comes down from the Ardèche volcanoes. It was voted one of the best waters in the world at the AVPA-Paris international gourmet water competition.
